Waterden
Waterden is a deserted medieval village lost in the mists of time. it was mentioned in the Doomsday Book and the Nomina Villarum, a list made of all cities, boroughs and townships in 1316 for Edward III. Like a lot of small villages, the Black Death took its toll and subsequent enclosures, from 1604 to the early 18th century, caused the village to be abandoned. There was a 16th century manor house, possibly build on the remains of an earlier medieval house. This house was demolished in 1781.
What does, remain, however, is a tiny church, All Saints Waterden, once almost derelict but extensively restored in 2018-19.
My imagination did the rest and the village is now, at least in the book, a North Norfolk village with a pub, a large Jacobean manor house, a medieval friary and a history going back beyond the Doomsday Book. And a deserted church.
